. During the first half of the decade, British acts such as Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin, Uriah Heep and Black Sabbath were at the height of their international fame, particularly in the United States.

Rock and roll

Rock and roll dominated popular music in the mid 1950s and late 1950s, and quickly spread to much of the rest of the world. Its immediate origins lay in a mixing together of various black musical genres of the time, including rhythm and blues and gospel music; with country and western and Pop.

Rhythm and blues also had a huge impact on 1950's music. Emerging from the jazz and blues of the 1940's, artists like Ray Charles helped inspire genres such as soul, Motown and funk. The upbeat bluesy nature of the music brought the New Orleans scene to the mainstream and inspired a new wave of jazz and blues fans.12 Feb 2020
In the 1950s, rock In' roll was able to do what jazz couldn't when it created a common culture amongst white and black teenagers. This was made possible by the advent of the radio, the availability of records, the television, and the population movement and societal changes of the 1950s.
Music in the 1950s was dominated by the birth of rock and roll. Rock and roll was a powerful new form of music that combined elements of rhythm and blues (R&B), pop, blues, and hillbilly music to create a sound that truly shook America.

The 1950s were a decade marked by the post-World War II boom, the dawn of the Cold War and the civil rights movement in the United States.

Rhythm and Blues of the fifties combined jazz, doo-wop, blues, and gospel to create a unique sound during the decade. It also spurred the creation of such genres as Rock 'n' Roll, soul, Motown, and funk music.

1950 Music History

It highlights key historical, social, and cultural elements of the period, including the Cold War and perceived communist threat; the birth of the middle class and establishment of consumer culture; the emergence of the civil rights movement; and the normalization of youth rebellion and rock and roll.
Television and automobile sales skyrocketed in the 1950s. With the massive growth in suburban populations, automobiles were needed more than ever, and were within reach for many first-time buyers. Families of all income brackets were buying televisions at a rate of five million a year.
During the 1950s, a sense of uniformity pervaded American society. Conformity was common, as young and old alike followed group norms rather than striking out on their own. Though men and women had been forced into new employment patterns during World War II, once the war was over, traditional roles were reaffirmed.

The top hits oldies music of the 70s is characterized by a number of musical styles. On one end, the heavy metal genre came of age with artists like Alice Cooper, Deep Purple, Aerosmith, and Kiss. On the other end, artists like The Jackson Five, The Osmonds, David Cassidy and The Bay City Rollers created teeny bopper pandemonium. The one music genre that really flourished in this era is the disco (Van McCoy, Donna Summer, Gloria Gaynor), which ruled the singles market, while the rock musicians concentrate on coming up with “serious” album projects.

As usual, black American artists played a major role in this era’s music, with soul, funk and disco. They produced a diversity of music ranging from excellent middle of the road-oriented recordings to bland disco tracks.

It is also an era when hits came internationally. The multitalented Bee Gees and Olivia Newton John led the invasion of Australian artists, while Swedish quartet Abba conquered from continental Europe.

The 70s was also an era when punk revolutionized music with such artists such as Iggy Pop and The Ramones. Elvis Costello may have been the only artist from the period to achieve lasting inter¬national success, but the attitude and energy of the time was to influence a legion of British pop stars in the 1980s.The decade ended with electropop, Euro disco and synth rock making their mark. A new wave of heavy metal artists were also banging their heads on the chart door, while rap, which would have a lot to say in the next two decades, was starting to enjoy its first taste of mass acceptance.

When you scan the top hits of the 80s oldies music, you will see that rock music (Queen, Def Leppard, Mötley Crüe, Bon Jovi, Quiet Riot, Europe, Ratt, Twisted Sister, Poison, Whitesnake, and Cinderella) continued to branch out into many sub-genres. Alt rock (Hüsker Dü, The Replacements, R.E.M., The Pixies, and Sonic Youth), heavy metal music (Ozzy Osbourne, Judas Priest, Dio), rap and hip hop (Run D.M.C., Beastie Boys, NWA, LL Cool J, Public Enemy, Eric B. & Rakim, Big Daddy Kane, Boogie Down Productions, Ice T) continued to grow.

The death of disco gave rise to dance music (Frankie goes to Hollywood, Wham!).

Female recording artists such as Madonna, Whitney Huston, Janet Jackson and Kylie Minogue grabbed the spotlight, shattering sales records, and the US experienced another invasion of British artists. Dire Straits, Michael Jackson, Bruce Springsteen as well as veteran acts like Paul McCartney, The Rolling Stones and The Who packed concerts.

Prince became a phenomenon, and showed the world that white rock added to black music was a winning combination, and artists such as New Kids on the Block, Rick Astley, Lisa Stansfield and Paul Young proved once again that sounding black was no hindrance to a white artist’s career. Michael Jackson’s Thriller became the best-selling album of all time.

The CD’s appeared, and became very popular very fast, making vinyl almost obsolete.

Music videos and MTV appeared and became an essential marketing tool for a single. This helps the career of good looking recording artists such as The Culture Club, Duran Duran and New Kids on the Block.

What were 5 famous dances during the 50's?
The most famous and popular 1950s dance styles
  • Rock'n'Roll. Rock'n'Roll is pretty much a blanket term for all of the dances that were danced to rock'n'roll music in the 1950s. ...
  • Jitterbug (also known as Jive) ...
  • Boogie Woogie. ...
  • Calypso. ...
  • Bunny Hop. ...
  • Hand Jive. ...
  • Twist. ...
  • The Stroll.
This was called jitterbug, or swing, Lindy, the rock'n'roll, boogie-woogie or Bop. The word Bop was new then, so almost everything was called the Bop.
What were some of the dances of the 1950s and 60s?
Rock and Roll dancing is actually swing dancing. East Coast Swing, West Coast Swing, Jive and Jitterbug, all came to be known as some type of Rock and Roll dancing, mostly thanks to the movie industry and the general media.

Popular Types of Dance
  • Ballet.
  • Ballroom.
  • Contemporary.
  • Hip Hop.
  • Jazz.
  • Tap Dance.
  • Folk Dance.
  • Irish Dance.
Here are my favorite 1960s dances:
  • The Twist – The iconic 1960s dance hit.
  • Mashed Potato – The dance made popular by Dee Dee Sharp's song Mashed Potato Time.
  • The Monster Mash – The Halloween classic favorite.
  • The Madison – The popular line dance.
  • The Hully Gully – “Shake your shoulders and wiggle your knees.”
The Twist

The Twist, a dance done by swiveling the hips, became a worldwide dance craze in the early 1960s. The Twist became extremely popular after Chubby Checker danced the Twist while singing the song of the same name on the "Dick Clark Show" on August 6, 1960
